Give the gift of a polar bear: The gift for someone who has everything!

My mom is known for Christmas shopping year round. I wish I had her organization skills. Even as I type this, she has gifts wrapped beautifully and tucked away in anticipation of Christmas. I feel good about things if I get going in September, but realistically I really start looking in October.

One idea I’ve embraced as part of our attempt at economizing and adding meaning to Christmas this year - is a donation in someone’s honor. I wanted to support an organization that would be universally appreciated, relevant to today’s issues and one that offered some nice material to go along with the donation.

I decided on adopting animals from the World Wildlife Federation. The WWF is the largest multinational conservation organization in the world, and has been around long before the environment was a buzzword – for 45 years. As part of the adoption options, you have your choice of 90 animals to choose from – and a range of adoption kits and prices.

I chose to adopt Polar Bears for my donation/gift. For family members with children, I also ordered (separately) the Polar Bear Webkinz to go with the adoption packages. The WWF offers stuffed animals with their $50 package, but of course with Webkinz being all the range, I decided to go that route. The adoption kids all come with an adoption certificate and a photo – the higher level packages come with additional goodies.

Another idea would be to adopt an animal and get a great children’s book that covers that animal as well. There are sorts of fun ways to make this more than just another gift that gets donated the following year to make room for more. And there are tons of worthwhile missions out there who also offer packages for gifts given in honor of an individual or family.

I’m also looking for other ways you’re making the holidays unique this year. Do you have a family tradition? Are you planning on downsizing creatively? If so, leave a comment with your ideas!

Ready for Hanna

Yes, that graphic definitely sums it up – it is officially a busy hurricane season. We’re preparing by buying some more flashlights and batteries and digging out the hurricane kit. The last time we dusted it off was when Olivia was about to turn one – she literally began walking the day Hurricane Isabel came up the coast and knocked out our power (for a full week).

A Quick Tip
One of the key things in the hurricane kit? A plug-in-the-wall, non-cordless telephone. Those cordless phones don’t do a thing when the power is lost! (I learned this one while living in Chick’s Beach during another hurricane!)

Your Photos are Safe!
With hurricane season in full swing, I thought I’d give you a behind-the-scenes look at how I protect your photos from loss once your session is complete. I go to great lengths in order to back-up your session photos. It all starts when I come home and download your images – I back up copies of the original Straight-Out-of-Camera photos to start.

I keep a copy of all final photos on my amazing Drobo – I have a crush on this storage system that duplicates data across multiple drives for stellar protection against a hard drive crash. My Drobo is one of the best investments I’ve made into the photography business as it allows me to sleep much more soundly at night…peace of mind!

Once I have completed processing your photos, I then upload them to an off-site storage system. This means that in the event something happens to my computer or to my home (yikes!), your photos are protected because they are stored on a secure server out of the area.

I keep client photos on file for a guaranteed year for ordering purposes.

If you’re interested in finding out more about off-site storage for your personal files and photos, drop me an email. I’d be glad to tell you more about it. It’s a great option for those priceless family snapshots you don’t want to lose – particularly in this day and age when we don’t get around to printing photos as often as we’d like.

Hope you all weather Hanna with ease! I’ll be shooting a wedding on the Eastern Shore on Saturday afternoon – my fingers are crossed for the bride and groom that the storm blows through in time for them to have their wedding outside as they’d originally planned. But don’t worry….they have a back-up plan, too!
