Sneak Peek: Baby Girl

I had the pleasure of photographing a rare weekday session on Monday with a beautiful family who welcomed a new baby girl into their fold. Her nursery was a pink and girly dream – including this wonderful butterfly mobile. I had to get an “artsy” shot of it. She was a joy to photograph – slept through all of my baby wrangling position changes and even let me take a few more in “the bowl” before she decided it was feeding time again. For mom and dad and big brother – enjoy these sneak peeks and your online gallery is coming soon!

Couldn’t decide between a preview of the black and white or color shot – so you get  both!

Gorgeous! I love the image you posted two of – the colour and the b/w version – I wouldn’t be able to choose between them either :)

Caught Him Smiling!

Still blogging daily – how long will this continue?! I’ve had a lot of sessions over the past couple of weeks, so lots of chances to share some beautiful faces with you. Check out this little guy. I photographed his newborn session and he was so happy for nearly all of it. Even awake he was happy to just hang out and look around. He also made lots of direct eye contact, which is so unusual for the newborn photo sessions. More of him later on, but check these out for now – and note that he’s got a little smile on that precious face in the last photo!

Baby Wednesday!

Newborn photo sessions are always an adventure and each one is very different. Most of the newborns I photograph are first babies, so mom and dad are still getting their feet wet when I arrive. I remember being scared to death the first few weeks (months, years, still!) after our daughter was born, so I can relate.

But newborn sessions have given me a confidence with babies I never would have had otherwise. I come in, strip your baby down, lull it to sleep with magic (in the form of a hairdryer!) and then I put the baby in creative poses you wouldn’t dream of trying! It can be a little disconcerting at first – what am I doing with your baby?! But if all goes according to plan, it makes for the really beautiful memories.

That’s not to say it’s easy – sometimes in a 3 hour newborn session, 2.25 hours of it is spent feeding, changing and rocking the baby! Mom and dad are usually exhausted when I leave, as is baby. Many parents tell me that their baby slept more than usual after the day of the session. Now THAT is a good side effect!

I loved this session because mom and dad really let me work with their sweet baby girl most of the time. I’m sure it wasn’t easy, but they watched as I figured out whether she was crying for a diaper change, because she was cold or because she was hungry. I try to do most of the baby wrangling during the sessions since I don’t smell like mom (milk!) and that means they don’t associate me with feeding time!

Mom and dad welcomed Jade a few days early and we actually photographed her session on her due date. She waffled back and forth between a deep slumber and some unhappy cries. But in the end, we got a lot of photos. We ventured out into their backyard, which is one of my favorite things to do when the weather will allow it.

One final note – we tried the “monkey pose” which is baby draped over dad’s arm. I’ve never had a baby do this pose while awake – in fact, I always make SURE they’re sound asleep! We tried it the first time and Jade didn’t want a thing to do with it. But after her tummy was filled again – low and behold she was happy in the pose while AWAKE!

P.S. Check back in the blog Friday for some very cute photos of Jade’s older siblings. Yes, she’s the first child, so you know what that means…. :)

This is a new gallery display for me – to see all of the photos, just click on the big one and it will open a gallery that you can click through to see them all!

Here’s the sweet baby girl of a brand new mom (and dad!) I met for a newborn session on Friday. Some serious cuteness going on with this one. We photographed her newborn session on her due date!

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms! And welcome to the club to all of you new moms. :)

P.S. Come back tomorrow to find out how you can nominate a deserving person or family for a free mini session.

Sometimes they just don’t sleep!

I’ve neglected posting several sneak peeks recently due to time – so this is one of those “post peeks.” :) Had to share this sweet little one – he’s the prime example of the fact that some little ones…don’t sleep! Sure, it looks like he’s sleeping in some of these, but mostly he’s yawning. And that was the theme for the day – he yawned his way through more than three hours of us cuddling, changing and feeding him, but alas, there was no long-term sleep to be had. Some of the best newborn photos come when the little guys are wide awake – so I will often stand by and wait to see what comes. In this case we got some adorable facial expressions and yes, the biggest yawns!

Look at how beautiful he is! His sweet face shines and he has a very proud big brother, too. You can see his birth announcement – a custom announcement designed with some photos from his session. I offer custom announcements on photographic paper as well as press-printed announcements and it’s such a time saver – all the important details are there – mail them and you’re done!
