Catching the Cat Eating the Christmas Tree!

We’ve just started putting up the decorations here and once again I’ve caught the cat in the act of trying to eat a tree! Step one: open mouth, make really funny face. Step two: chomp on tree. Step three: lick chops!

Olivia’s Big-Girl Glasses

Olivia recently got new glasses and I wanted to share some recent photos. These are her first non-wire frames and she looks positively grown up!  She’s been in glasses since age two and they are such a part of who she is now.

I’ve had lots of practice photographing Olivia in glasses, which comes in handy when I do a session with a child in glasses. Photographing people wearing glasses can be a little tricky because of the potential for glare. Here are some quick tips to help.

A couple of quick tips for photographing people in glasses:

  1. When possible do not use your flash. If you have a diffuser and/or can “bounce” your flash in a different direction to avoid flashing off the glasses, that’s the way to go. (This is true for shooting towards a mirror, windows or other items that will reflect the flash back to the camera.
  2. Before you take their photo, have the person turn slightly to the left or right and note how the glare on their lenses changes. Shoot from the position with the least glare.
  3. It also helps to shoot from a little above or a little below the person.
  4. Avoid harsh/hard light when possible, as the more light you have, the more opportunity for glare you can have – so if you’re in full sun and there’s shade available, head for the shade!

Awww! i loveeee taking pics too .. and these are so adorablee!

Amy Sandoval Newborn Photography: Generations

This little addition to the Ghent section of Norfolk gave his parents a bit of a scare, but bounced back and had me at “sneeze!” The first photo caught one of his sneezes in progress! (Note that since he was in the buff, it is carefully cropped for the web!)

I love the second photo – look at him studying his hand. Ah, discovery! He also got to play dress-up in Mom’s traditional Indian jewelry and with mom and dad’s wedding rings. This is always a favorite shot – it shows off the petite little piggies. Soon you’ll wonder how his feet could have been so tiny.

The “monkey baby” pose was a challenge this time around - this little guy was not quite sure about falling asleep with all the excitement going on around him. But eventually, tummy full and room warm, he gave in and we were able to get the photo on dad’s arm. Look at that peaceful, blissed-out face!  (This session was shot just one week ago on one of the last warm days before the cold snap – hard to believe we had to turn on the air conditioner to cool off!)

I also captured the newest generation with his mom and dad and his grandmother – mom’s mom. I love how each of them interacted with him – an absolute glow on their faces. He is truly the light of their eye.

Congratulations to Mom and Dad – I enjoyed spending the afternoon with you all! Your online gallery is right around the corner!

Another Beautiful Slideshow – Get Out the Tissues!

Friends, it is the busy season! How can you tell? I’m still shooting sessions but the sneak peeks have temporarily been put on hold while I finish up galleries! I promise to post some great peeks from recent sessions soon.

In the meantime, check out this beautiful slideshow from a newborn session back in October. It looks lovely on the web, but when I watched it on my TV…I shed some tears! I love capturing family relationships, and the slideshow beautifully captures the love shared within this family.

Make sure your pop-up blocker doesn’t pop the new window that will open when you click on the link. You will see a window pop up with either the “open” or “save” option – just click open and the file will begin downloading and will play automatically. Be sure your speakers are on – but not too loud – there’s music. You can hit “Escape” anytime to return to your screen. Enjoy!

Decorating Inspiration

I draw inspiration for my home from a variety of sources. I’m a magazine addict, love crafty magazines and sites (even if I never actually make anything!) and could spend hours in scrapbooking stores despite not actually scrapbooking! I love paper, prints, etc. Poppytalk is a blog dedicated to all things decorative, crafty and inspirational. They also have advertising – and unlike a lot of sites where the advertising is nothing but annoying – I end up clicking an advertiser’s link and fall in love with yet another concept. Not to mention the opportunity to order some beautiful hand-made items.

Months ago – maybe even a full year ago – I fell in love with an idea from the site. Someone had randomly arranged a grouping of eclectic plates together to make a very personal and artistic addition to their wall. The great thing is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money but you can cover a lot of space – which I had a lot of – lots of empty walls in my dining room.

So I set about on my search for electic plates. Some came from eBay, others from Etsy, a few from TJ Maxx, a few more from Marshalls and a few from thrift stores. The plates also came from all over the country and even the world - a trip to El Paso to visit my sister, one (my favorite – the little dog plate!) even came from England. Getting them on the wall to look random? Probably the most difficult part! Anyway – after a few weeks of them sitting on our home office floor – and me moving one here and another one there – I finally got the look I was going for. Then I had to hang them up. Challenge two! Remembering where each one goes!

Anyway, here is the results. I’m pretty happy with them. I still think I will probably tweak a couple and I want to add at least one or two more. (This is the room right before our CPA party for Steve a couple of weeks ago!)
