Sandbridge Beach Wedding: Beauty in the Details

As promised, I’m posting a few more sneak peeks from Megan and Travis’ Sandbridge beach wedding. One of my favorite things about beach weddings is the details – beach-ready hair, bare feet, beautiful bouquets, etc. The details don’t have to be expensive but can really pop against the neutral tones of the sand and surroundings. Check out the photos below for some fun detail shots from their wedding.

I love her hair – beachy waves with twisted pieces pulled back. Easy, beautiful and very realistic for the wind on the beach! Also loved the opportunity to take some photos of their wedding rings on the old pier-like pilings outside the house. Her bouquet is made up of half-opened roses in a beautiful shade of peach – again, the color pops against the neutral beach tones. And finally, had to catch a shot of her tattoos next to the freshly French manicured toes. I love the combo!

These are stunning! The ring shots, hair detail, sun flares. They have to love these!

Megan and Travis’ Sandbridge Beach Wedding

If you’re sensing a theme for the last few blog posts, yes, it IS the month of Sandbridge beach weddings. This is my second wedding in Sandbridge this month and I am shooting another one there this week. It is the perfect time of year to get married on the beach in Virginia Beach – lower humidity, long evenings (plenty of light) and mild temperatures.

Megan and Travis met in high school and are a fabulous couple. I love that their first dance was to a Bob Marley song! They planned a fun, low-key wedding right on the beach, with a reception at a rental home afterwards.

The “golden hour” in Sandbridge is around 7 this time of year – which is exactly when Megan and Travis said their vows as Travis’ grandfather conducted the ceremony, so we had beautiful light to shoot in. The light was even more beautiful for the bride and groom portion of the photography.

Another “theme” of my coverage is dedicated time to photographing the bride and groom alone together. This is my favorite portion of the wedding because it’s typically the first time the bride and groom have had any alone time since they’ve gotten married. I encourage them to hug, kiss, cuddle and generally take a moment to breathe it in – they are married!

I will start out by posing the couple or giving them a few instructions and then the rest typically happens naturally. Since Megan was wearing a veil, we had to try the “bride and groom under the veil shot” (very popular among wedding photographers) – and now I know why I haven’t seen it attempted on the beach! We got a few fun shots right before the veil flew off her head!

I have a few more sneak peeks to post soon, so stay tuned for more from this wedding – including a close-up of Megan’s hair from the back – for brides wondering how to style your hair for the beach, I thought her hair style was gorgeous. Natural but glam and easy-to-manage-in wind … all at the same time.

Taylor’s High School Senior Session

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and photographing two amazing girls named Taylor in the last two weeks. I featured the first Taylor’s session last week and am pleased to feature the second Taylor’s session this week!

This Taylor is a Salem High School senior looking forward to going to school next year in Colorado. She is a beautiful, vibrant young woman who talked about her love for her family and brought tons of energy to her session. As I mentioned in a previous post, Taylor’s father passed away last year and she brought his guitar and hat to the session to remember him. She also changed clothes several times, so we got a lot of fun looks to mix it up. Taylor’s cousin Sam also came along and was a huge help! She held things, carried things and held up the reflector for me several times. And when a friend called in need of a good conversation in light of a recent heartbreak? These girls kept her going with humor, great advice and solid support. It reminded me of how important great friendships are for us girls!

Chrissy & Joe’s Sandbridge Beach Wedding at Little Island Park

Chrissy and Joe have the thing that young love has… you know, the thing that makes you sparkle when you look into the eyes of the person you love… the thing that makes you laugh together at inside jokes…the thing that lets you know when your new husband is about to dip you over for a dramatic beach kiss! I think the “thing” is passion.

They were married at Little Island Park on the southern tip of Sandbridge in Virginia Beach in a casual, shoes-off ceremony under beautiful sunny skies. Kirstynn and I had such a great time following them around and catching their moments together. Here are just a few sneak peek photos for them as they prepare to go on their honeymoon – we wish you more sunny skies and amazing beach days on the honeymoon and always!

(A note about processing: I love the very stylish “vintage” touches that are currently so fashionable in photography – and applied some of that to a few of these. Clients always receive the “before” vintage and “after” vintage options on their final DVD of photos – so they always have a choice. I included a before/after of one in this post to give a better idea of the two options – both are fun!)
