Hi there – I emailed you and look forward to seeing the photo in your mosaic!
Beautiful images Amy

I met this fun family at Little Island Park in Sandbridge and love that they were willing to get some beautiful family shots that weren’t the “sitting in the dunes” type shots. Those are great, too, but there are lots of good spots for family photos in that area, including, yes, under the pier. I also fell in absolute love with their feisty and totally sweet dog, Jack. Stay tuned to the next post – tomorrow’s Detail Friday – and prepare to fall in love with Jack!

Gorgeous images. They look like such a fun family and I love the last one where they are all walking hand in hand

Yesterday morning, I put out a casting call on my Facebook fan page (are you a fan? they get special treatment!) for a high school senior willing to do a session in Virginia Beach. An idea had been brewing in my head since driving by these bright, golden fields and I had to experiment before those sweet fields were harvested. Lucky for me, my wonderful fans spread the word and within a few hours I had a Kellam High School senior lined up.
And we did the shoot tonight! When I arrived at Katie’s house, I was thrilled to see that she and her mom had picked out a vintage yellow dress that would pop! and zing! against the golden colors of the field. Not only that, it went perfectly with the vintage styling that was brewing in my head as well. Sometimes – and this is definitely one of those times – I am convinced that things are just meant to be.
Katie is not just beautiful, but talented and way smart as well. I found out she’s passionate about musical theatre and is applying to major-fabulous colleges (American, Yale, UVA to name a few!). She shared her whirlwind schedule with me – there’s voice, piano, theatre, SAT prep and lots of other things in there. I knew I was lucky to spend a few hours with her. Let me also tell you that Katie is brave. We waded through fields up to our waists in what we discovered were soybeans, met up with no less than three gigantic spiders while carefully “borrowing” some amazing spots on a southern Virginia Beach farm, and all the while she kept her smile. (Did I mention she knelt down in the field?!)
It was worth it. I had to share just a few peeks tonight because I get such a thrill out of how it all came together. And you’d never know it came together in less than 48 hours. Except that, well, I just told you.

Beautiful girl – beautiful pictures!!
Can you tell me where I can find info on prices for a family photo shoot? Three kids, ages 4,6,& 8. Thanks!
Thanks for your comment! Sent an email to you!

This guy was not a newborn at two months but we gave him the newborn treatment anyway and he was a charmer. As we started prepping for the session, his mom said she’d brought a hairdryer because it really soothed him when he cried. Now I’ve heard this before but I hadn’t seen it in action. It was amazing. Moms of newborns – get yourself a cheap hairdryer for just this purpose right now! Future newborn and baby clients – I have purchased a hairdryer and it will accompany all sessions as my bowls, baskets and blankets do!
For the most part he was calm and cool and he stayed awake throughout the session. But occasionally he’d get a little unhappy and mom would whip out the hairdryer and run the warm air gently across his little feet – instant contentness was restored. (She says it soothes diaper rash very well, too!) Just having the noise in the room works wonders, but blowing it across his feet was the ultimate in calm.
Mom also brought with her some beautiful hand-knit hats. I loved the way they photographed so much that I l went to the website she’d shared with me and and purchased the very style and color on his head and the same one in pink for future babies sessions!
I photographed the session at my home and enjoyed the opportunity to experiment with a woodsy corner in my backyard as well. I will now be offering my home as an option for newborn and baby sessions and am pleased with the light we had for this session – even on a mostly cloudy day. This is a wonderful option for parents who aren’t sure they have the light or space for a baby session at their home.
I love all his little expressions – two months is the wonderful age when they are perfecting their smiles and truly beginning to “talk.” He even had a few conversations with mom while I photographed him – it was absolutely heart melting and reminded me of the days when my daughter began making those sweet noises.

Hi Amy,
I love your photos!!
I’m from South Africa, and here it’s unusual to photograph your baby in your style.
But, I just love it, and seeing that I’m a photographer, I would love to start taking photos on babies in your way!!
Please can you share with me the website name of the hat that this baby is wearing?
I just looove it!!
Thank you!
Hi Lize – thank you! I emailed you with the web address to order the hats.
These are gorgeous. Heis just adorable!!
Ohhh these are just gorgeous! Beautiful images
Hi Amy!!! I love these hats!! Where did you find them? Your work is wonderful!!
I’ll email you the website DeAnna – she makes adorable stuff!

Earlier this year I donated a portrait package to a silent auction for the incredibly important Help and Emergency Response Organization in Portsmouth. In a not-so-accidental twist of fate, the person who asked me to donate the package also won it! And so she treated her four sweet nieces to a session.
I enjoyed every minute with these four beautiful girls at our portrait session on Sunday afternoon. I couldn’t believe how well behaved they were, how natural they were in front of the camera and what a fab job they did keeping their dresses clean!
Had to share this “outtake” when we were trying to capture the three older girls and their 2-year-old sister “crashed” the party. She’s so proud of herself, too. Love the look on her face as she makes eye contact with me while she walks by!
