Joy and Phil’s Yorktown Wedding Part 3: The hottest bride & groom photos I’ve ever taken :)

Joy mentioned to me when we had our final chat about their wedding that it was going to be hot that day. But a week out I don’t worry too much about weather. But that week dawned and it was indeed the hottest day of the year (so far and I hope for good!) this year. My car temperature gauge never dipped below 100 on the drive up to Yorktown – with the exception of the tunnel, where it reached a cool 97 degrees! But these two remained calm and cool as cucumbers. We changed up our plans a bit and focused on quickly shooting a few bride and groom photos between the ceremony and reception so we could focus more photo time when it was cooler at sunset.

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to shoot a few in the battlefield that was just next to the church they got married in. So we literally drove over, left air conditioning running in our cars and shot these in what little shade we could find. I’m so glad we did. It’s amazing what can happen in 10 minutes when your subjects are so in love. :)

Nothing beats a good bow tie shot!Joy doesn’t even look like she’s breaking a sweat. So beautiful.Love is wiping the sweat off your new husband’s face during your bride and groom photos!Love the timelessness of this one in such a timeless place. Bet that tree behind her could tell some stories if it could talk.

{Beautiful Bride} Bridal Photos at Norfolk Pagoda

I love having plenty of time between the ceremony and reception to capture photos of the bride and groom together. During that time I also get a few photos of just the bride. Many brides still schedule bridal portraits today, but there’s still something about having some bridal-style portraits taken the day of the wedding when the story is complete – catching the details of the hair, the flowers in her hands and her beautiful dress is a must for the wedding day. And, when you’re getting married at a place as beautiful as the downtown Norfolk Pagoda, you have to take advantage of the great backdrop, too.

Here’s some of Vivian’s bridal-style photos from the wedding day. I’ve loved every minute of working on this wedding – which I’m sure you can tell with all their sneak peeks!

{After-The-Wedding Session} Fort Story Wedding Photography

More from Beth and Rob’s after-the-wedding session. I photographed their wedding at Fort Story a couple of months ago and since we didn’t get the bride and groom photos we wanted that day, we met up again and recreated the day. We all agreed that the follow-up session was a great opportunity to really enjoy the surroundings, pose with more thought and general take more time. It’s also a chance to get more bridal-style portraits as well. (Check out Beth’s gorgeous photos below!)

I enjoyed it so much that I would love to offer these sessions anytime. If you would like to set up this type of session, please let me know. I will extend a discount from my normal portrait session fee for these sessions since you’ve already invested in wedding day photos.

Prince-George-to-the-Beach Bridal Session: A Few More

I’m finishing up processing on this bridal session and wanted to share a few more. Megan asked if we could get a few shots of her sitting on the sand in her dress and I’m thrilled that she was brave enough to try this – the photos are unique and fun.

The Prince-George-to-the-Beach Bridal Session

Megan came down from Prince George for her beach bridal session. I will be traveling up her way in May next year to photograph her wedding and I know it is going to be a blast. My assistants on this shoot were Megan’s mom, dad and good friend Brooke - I could get used to having so many hands available to hold lenses, move the ladder (yes, I use a ladder on some shoots!) and swish the dress in all the right places.

The crew set up shop at our house and I got to experience the excitement when everyone saw Megan in her dress for the first time. And she absolutely glowed! We also had an amazing sunset at the end of the session. Here are some sneak peeks from Megan’s bridal session – I have more work to do on this session, and will hopefully have time to post a few more later this week.
