Is it May yet? Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads Engagement Photo Session

Libby and Drew are getting married in May and I can’t wait for their wedding. I gushed all over them in my short sneak peek but I want to share lots and lots more from their session. So here we go!

I love the sass in this one!

I see the shape of Texas in this tree. My daughter sees a heart. Either way, these bendy trees are awesome!

I love this series.

I think Drew got a little “handsy” in these and the look on Libby’s face was priceless!

They did this naturally – love the pose.

Libby grabbed Drew’s glasses for a few fun shots.

Drew is all “yeah, I got this,” in this one and I love that about him!

I told Drew to whisper a secret in Libby’s ear to see if we could get a funny laugh. Love her shy hand to mouth!

Libby pinned a couple of funny photos to her pinterest inspiration board of couples on their cell phones together. So we wanted to recreate that in their session. Because I don’t know a couple around today who doesn’t occasionally text one another while sitting across the table from one another. Wait, just me and my husband?!

They’re so pretty/handsome. And so is the sun going down behind them in these shots.

Sneak Peek: Too many to choose from – Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach Engagement Session

I met Libby and Drew on what ended up being probably the last crisp and cool winter-ish afternoon in this strangely warm winter. Spring bloomed just a few days later and seems here to stay. I’ll be photographing their wedding in May and when Libby called me and told me she was going to do things differently, I knew I wanted to photograph their wedding. I love their desire to focus the wedding on the time with their friends and family and the importance of the marriage itself. Their ceremony will be non-traditional and I love that their wedding weekend schedule begins with yoga early each morning. The problem with their engagement session is that there were so many great photos that it was hard to narrow down the ones I wanted to focus on. But it’s a great problem to have.

A big thank you to Theresa Little Makeup Artistry. Libby and Drew were on the drive down from DC when they realized that Libby’s makeup was sitting back at home. Theresa made herself available to do Libby’s makeup on a moment’s notice and rocked it. I’m so grateful to work with fantastic vendors like Theresa.

Libby…Drew…here are a couple of favorites. Your online gallery is coming your way soon and there will be quite a few to choose from!

Norfolk Botanical Gardens Engagement Session {aka the I Love Fall Session!}

It’s been a long time since I’ve shot a portrait session at Norfolk Botanical Gardens and there couldn’t be a better time of year to explore there than in the fall. I met Maliha and BJ there on one of those cloudy days when it was misting rain at my house but was actually a little sunny at the Gardens when I arrived. Although we had clouds for much of their engagement session, it was still gorgeous with all the leaves at peak color. I loved hearing about how they met and the fact that they were together as friends for a while before realizing it was love. It felt like we had the gardens to ourselves for their engagement session and it was fun getting to know the grounds again. The color there is seriously gorgeous right now and I’m sure the leaves will be all gone soon, so we hit it at just the right time for a colorful and warm engagement portrait session. Here we go with their sneak peek!

So many beautiful fall colors at the gardens right now. These trees line the road.

Not just a gorgeous couple but a fun one, too. And I told Maliha she reminds me a lot of Leighton Meister (who I think is beautiful).

Note the wardrobe changes. They dressed in some layers and each brought a shirt in addition to the layers for fast changes to add variety to their engagement session. Smart!

I must credit pinterest.com for the idea behind this photo. I shared a photo on my inspiration board from pinterest.com with Maliha that’s similar to this and she nailed it and truly made it her own. Love it!

And as with some of the other photos from their engagement session, this one worked so well in black and white that I had to share that version with you, too. :)

The less-moody version of the shot is beautiful, too.

I love this one. Cloudy days are so perfect for that soft light – perfect with their smiles.

In the bottom photos they’re standing in the same spot in the garden but we turned the perspective around and it was so colorful. Loved the top photos for the green tones and the bottom photos for the fall tones, which are great for their wardrobe colors. And y’all know that lately I’ve been loving my client’s wardrobe choices!

Her engagement ring is stunning. It is a family heirloom passed down in BJ’s family.

The photos below don’t even look like this area to me because they’re so colorful. And they rocked the natural, awesome poses.

As we were walking out I snapped the last shot and it reminded me that winter and the holidays are around the corner.

I ADORE the colors of your photos. What actions are you using to get them to pop without ruining skin tones?

Anna + Chip {Heirloom Engagement Photo Session in Virginia Beach}

Anna mentioned on her client information sheet that she didn’t want “typical kissy kissy engagement” photos, so as we were gearing up for Chip and Anna’s engagement session, I said, “Remind me if we get too cheesy!” I think that one statement freed all of us in a way. In addition to offering some  specific posing ideas, I said something like, “Okay, stand in this great light and just be yourselves – chat, talk, laugh, tell each other stories and secrets.” And I really like the result. While we got plenty of the posed looks, we also got some fun photojournalistic-styled photos. So thank you, Chip and Anna, for reminding me to just let things happen and photograph the results!

Now, let me talk about what makes a great session “look.” Anna did an incredible job of picking their wardrobe! For me, there are four key ingredients to a good session: fun clients, great location, great light and a thoughtful wardrobe. For a lot of clients, the fourth ingredient, wardrobe, is the trickiest thing to figure out. But what do I mean by a thoughtful wardrobe? Here are the keys to thought-out wardrobe choices: the wardrobe tones should compliment the location by either contrasting or complementing the tones of the location. The clothing on each client should be coordinated but not matchy matchy.

“Wha?!,” you say? Yes, coordinated but not perfectly matching – see how they’re both dressed in dark jeans and warm tones – but NOT the same colors? Coordinated – but not matchy! Another hint for easy variety within a session: note that Anna kept on the same shirt throughout the session but changed her look by removing her sweater for a few shots and then adding a different jacket over the shirt. Chip changed sweaters half way through for great guy-variety as well! As you look through the photos, think about how different they would feel if they were wearing different colors.

And I’ll wrap up this crazy-long post by saying that it has been so fun to photograph at this location during every season this year (well, with the exception of dead of winter, but that’s coming!). I started out in  April with Patrick and Brittany’s engagement session (and they are friends with Anna and Chip!) and met Phil and Joy there a couple of weeks later for their session. Even in just a couple of weeks you can see the difference in the colors and foliage of the farm. In June, I met Gary and Samantha there for their engagement session and that beautiful field of green grass had turned into a golden field of wheat. (And note how the spring couples are also dressed perfectly for their seasons!) Next up is Lydia and Vance – we met at the farm in August and there was a deep green field of soybeans growing where that wheat had been harvested. And just about a week before Chip and Anna’s session, I met Ashley and Shaun at the farm, where we captured the soybeans at their bright yellow peak. And here we are just a week later, the soybean leaves had turned brown and created this deep-brown, so-very-harvest color that was just right with Anna and Chip’s heirloom vibe.

Anna wore a necklace and jacket that belonged to Chip’s grandmother and they also incorporated some of her antique rugs into their session as well for a real heirloom look. And Anna’s beautiful engagement ring was his grandmother’s as well. It came together along with their laid-back charm and personality to create a wonderful scene. And here we go!!!

Here’s Radish, watching me take photos. Definitely the world’s cutest mini pony.

Radish checks in with Anna and Chip to see if they have anything good to eat. :)

It was at about this time that Anna jokingly told Chip to “smize” – which of course led to a great discussion of “America’s Next Top Model!”

One of those great, impromptu moments!

Anna is definitely smizing. Definitely.

Anna’s engagement ring. Love.

Thank goodness we caught the field at this moment in time – those soybeans made for the perfect color for a crisp fall day.

Love, love, love.

This one felt like it wanted to be in color. And in black and white.

Parting shot of Radish. I call this one “The Visitor.” He kept an eye on us. I think he wants his own pony session!

These turned out great guys! Amy, your talents behind the lens are incredible!

Virginia Beach Engagement Photographer: Ashley and Shaun

Anyone who has lived here long enough knows that Virginia Beach can have a small-town feel. Ashley contacted me about an engagement session for she and Shaun and once we got to chatting, we realized that one of her close friends was one of my fab neighbors. Then, we realized that she knew my friends who own the farm where we did their session!  Love that about this area. This location has become one of my most requested places to shoot sessions, especially engagement sessions, and with its charm, heart carved into a tree and amazing light, I don’t think I will get tired of shooting here. I’ve photographed the farm in nearly every season and even got to document just a hint of fall color this time. Ashley and Shaun are so sweet – real, kind and just very natural together. They didn’t even mind when the newest member of the farm’s family, Radish, an adorable pony, “photo bombed” their session just a little bit. Since Ashley works with horses, so it seemed like a great fit to have a little pony guest star in a few frames!

Definitely a session favorite on the left. And love the fall colors in the shot on the right!

Ashley rocked the accessories – her belt is a great addition to the texture and feel of their session.

Another favorite. They both have beautiful eyes.

I remember mentioning that they could kiss some if they wanted a few “kissing” shots. Shaun was like, “Alright!!” The photos in the golden soybean field below are why I love photographing out in the country!

Radish, the new pony-in-residence, makes the cutest “photo bomb” appearance of the year. :)

I will be sad when those soybean fields are cleared. They make for amazing backdrops! The last frames of the evening are lit up courtesy of my daughter, Olivia, who was holding my off-camera flash. She’s coming in handy!)
